Removing Subscribers with Hard Bounces From Your Subscriber List

Hard bounces are a subset of undeliverables that have bounced due to being invalid. Typically, hard-bounced email addresses are misspelled, old, or for users or domains that no longer exist. To eliminate the chance of including these known invalid email addresses in future email sends, ExactTarget recommends updating your internal database appropriately, as well as uploading these addresses into your All Subscribers list as Unsubscribed.

Please note that after you complete the first procedure, the system outputs a CSV file that you will re-import into the system.

How To Create a List of Hard Bounced Email Addresses

  1. Click the Tracking tab.
  2. View the details of your last email campaign by double-clicking on the campaign.
  3. Click on the link to the right of Hard bounce. This opens a list of the hard bounces from your chosen campaign.
  4. Click on the Export icon in the upper left corner.
    • For Export Type choose comma separated value (.csv).
    • Choose your perferred delivery method
  5. Click on the Finish button.

How To Update Hard Bounced Subscribers

Note: This procedure begins outside the ExactTarget application and in your spreadsheet application.
  1. Add a column named Status to your hard bounce file. Populate this field with the word Unsubscribed.
  2. Import the hard bounce file to your All subscribers list. Uploading to your All Subscribers list is critical to avoid future list creation with invalid addresses.
  3. Check the Update Subscriber Records checkbox in the Import Wizard.
  4. Map the fields Email address and Status.
  5. Import your file.
  6. Spot check to ensure that subscribers have been unsubscribed appropriately.
