How to Create an SMS Voting Action

Follow these steps to create an SMS voting action in your account.

1. If you have not done so already, create a data extension to hold the information gathered by the SMS voting action. This data extension must include columns for the MO phone number (Phone) and the actual vote information (Vote).

   NOTE: If you make the Phone column a primary key, MO users will only be able to submit one vote category in their message. Use this function to control whether single or multiple vote categories are allowed.

2. Click Interactions.
3. Click Messages.
4. Click SMS.
5. Click MO Keyword.
6. Click Create.
7. Complete the information in the Properties section:
   • Name: Enter the name of the keyword definition
   • Verbs: Enter the verb for this voting action. When the system receives this verb at the beginning of an  MO message, it triggers this voting action 
   • Next Keyword: Leave this field blank for this action.
8. Under Action Type, change the value of the dropdown menu to Vote.
9. Under Action Settings, change the dropdown menu to the data extension used to hold the voting results.
10. Enter the text to be used in case of a generic error in the Generic Error Message text field. The MO user receives this text if they fail to send a usable response.
11. Enter text to be used for an invalid category in the Invalid Category Message text field. The MO user receives this text if they send a vote for an invalid category.
12. Enter the name of the column in the data extension that stores mobile numbers in the Mobile Phone Column text field.
13. Enter the text to be used in case of multiple votes to the Multi-Vote Error Message text box. The MO user receives this text if they vote multiple times in a situation where only one vote is permitted.

    NOTE: This error occurs only if the Phone column is checked as a primary key.

14. Enter the text to be used for all successful exchanges in the Success Message text field. The MO user receives this text if their vote was successfully send and recorded.
15. Enter all valid voting categories in the Valid Categories text field. Separate each category with a comma. MO users will need to enter these categories exactly when voting. If you leave the Valid Categories text field blank, it becomes a free-form text field and any MO user-submitted vote will be recorded.
16. Enter the name of the column in the data extension used to store the category votes in the Vote Category Column text field.
17. Click Save to save your voting action.
