SMS Brochure Opt-In Scenario Guide

This guide contains scenario, conceptual and procedural information on using SMS messages to help distribute printed information (such as a brochure) and prompt users to subscribe to an SMS distribution  list.

SMS Messages

This page makes frequent reference to the creation and use of SMS messages. Please refer to the SMS Messages section for more information on creating and sending SMS messages.

Tools and Prerequisites

To execute the scenario in this guide, you must have the following:

  • A private short code or a shared short code.
  • The SMS feature enabled on your account. Contact your account manager or customer support for more information.

Scenario

Northern Trails uses an SMS opt-in system to communicate with their customers, and they want to use that opt-in system to gather email addresses for an email brochure.

In their advertising, they print their SMS short code and invite interested customers to send an MO message with the keyword BROCHURE. The message is processed, and the cusomter recevies an MT message with the keyword EMAIL asking for a valid email address. The customers sends another MO message with their email address. When the email address is confirmed, the customer receives an MT message thanking them and inviting them to join the SMS notification list Northern Trails operates.

Build Your Brochure Email

Use the ExactTarget email to create your message. This email send will be triggered by a future SMS message.

The EMAIL MO Message

First, create the EMAIL MO keyword. Use the following values to complete the process:

Name Email Request
Verb EMAIL
Action Type                                                    Send SMS

For the Message field, enter your content, including the new verb and the request for the email address. For example, Northern Trails would use the following text:

Thanks for your request. Text BROCHURE youremail@example.com to receive your brochure.

The BROCHURE MO Message

Next, create the BROCHURE MO keyword. Use the following values to complete the process:

Name Brochure Send
Verb BROCHURE
Action Type Send email to user
Failure Message "We received an error sending your email. Please try again."
Missing Email Message "You did not provide a valid email address. Please try again."
Success Message                                              "Thank you! Enjoy your email brochure."
Triggered Send Definition Customer Key             Enter the external key value that identifies the triggered email interaction to send

When the MO user sends the keyword BROCHURE to your short code, they will get the success message, and a triggered send will send the specific email to the chosen email address.
