Live Image allows you to collect and evaluate information on images used in your email sends and choose image content for your emails based on a period of time, its impression and click count data, or your manual command while your email job is in progress.

Use Live Image to perform the following actions:

You can use any two images in your portfolio.

NOTE: Live Image will be available in Innovations Lab beginning in July. Please contact your ExactTarget representative if you have any questions regarding the availability of this feature.

Live Image Tracking Data

Live Image records the number of times an image is viewed (an impression) and the number of times that image is clicked. The ExactTarget application displays the impression and click count data for those images based on unique subscribers, not on the amount of times a subscriber views or clicks on the information. For example, 50 users clicking on one image 134 times would still register as 50 clicks. You can get information on total clicks and impressions by viewing the Live Image data extensions. This information includes both clicks and impressions sent through regular email sends and test sends.

ResetButton.pngIf you want to reset the tracking information for your Live Image, you can click the Reset button in the Live Image menu bar. Clicking this button erases all previous tracking statistics for the Live Image. You can use this to restart your campaign or try the Live Image in another campaign. Please note that your Live Image tracking data cannot be recovered once you click the Reset button, so make sure that you no longer wish to refer to that tracking data before you erase it.

Live Image Data Extensions

When you create a Live Image, the ExactTarget application creates data extensions to hold the information used to manage the Live Image. Every Live Image gets two data extensions:

  1. (Live Image Name)_LiveImageSummary: a summary of the Live Image's attributes and recent activity
  2. (Live Image Name)_LiveImageActivity: a record of every impression and click associated with the Live Image

Live Images that switch images after a certain amount of clicks or impressions also use a (Live Image Name)_LiveImageOffer1ConsumptionData data extension used to record the subscribers who viewed or clicked an image before the threshold was reached.

WARNING: These data extensions must be retained in order to use the Live Image correctly. Do not delete these data extensions unless you are deleting the Live Image entirely.

Enabling Live Image For Your Account

Live Image must be activated for your account by ExactTarget. You must also be able to use data extensions with your account, as your account receives three data extensions to store Live Image information. Please contact your ExactTarget representative for more information about activating these features.

Creating a New Live Image

  1. Log in to your ExactTarget account.
  2. Upload the two images you wish to use in your Live Image to your Portfolio.
  3. Click the Content tab.
  4. Click the plus sign next to the Live Content menu and select Live Image.
  5. In the workspace, click Create.
  6. Enter the appropriate information in the Name, Description and Image Alt Text fields. The Name and Image Alt Text fields are required.
  7. Click the Change link under Image A and select the image you want to use from your Portfolio. Click OK when you have selected the photo you want to use.
  8. Enter the link for the image in the Target URL field.
  9. Enter the attributes for the image in the Image Attributes field following a type:property format. For example, an image intended for use during the spring would get a season:spring attribute.
  10. Repeat steps 9 through 11 for the Image B section.
  11. NOTE: The size of the content area storing the Live Image in your email is determined by the image you choose for Image A. If Image B is larger or smaller than Image A, Image B will be altered to the same dimensions as Image A. It's best to make sure the images are the same size to ensure proper layout of your email content.

  12. Choose either the Sequential or Random radio button by the Delivery heading. If you choose Sequential, the image will change from A to B after a certain threshold is reached. If you choose Random, the image will be randomly assigned to emails in the overall job.
  13. Choose either the Dynamic or Static radio button by the Assignment heading. If you choose Dynamic, the image will change depending on when the subscriber opens their email. If you choose Static, the email will present the same image no matter when it is opened.
  14. NOTE: If you choose the Random delivery option, every image assignment will be static and this choice will be unavailable.

  15. Click the dropdown menu next to the Switch from A to B based on heading and choose one of the following:

    • Date and Time: Once you have selected this option, enter the data and time you want for the expiration of the first image. After this point in time, the Live Image will switch from Image A to Image B.
    • Number of Impressions: Once you have selected this option, enter the number of impressions in the text field next to the dropdown menu. The image will switch from A to B when the Live Image reaches this threshold. (Limit 100,000)
    • Number of Clicks: Once you have selected this option, enter the number of clicks in the text field next to the dropdown menu. The Live Image will switch from Image A to Image B when this threshold is reached. (Limit 100,000)

NOTE: Remember that multiple impressions or clicks by one user are only counted as one impression or click.

    • Manual: When you select this option, the Live Image will change from Image A to Image B only when you click the Manually Switch Now link next to Image B.

  16. Click Save.
