FTP Instruction GuideFrom $1Table of contents
OverviewExactTarget offers the following advanced options for using FTP to import your large subscriber data files into a subscriber list:
Please contact your ExactTarget account manager if would like to enable any of these FTP options for your account. If your organization uses the ExactTarget API, see also the ExactTarget API documentation for information about using the FTP site with certain API calls. About FTP Security and Site Clean-UpAll users who log in to the ExactTarget FTP site have limited write permissions only. An existing file on the site cannot be overwritten, and the list of files on the site cannot be viewed by anyone who logs in. The ExactTarget FTP site uses FTP with SSL (explicit encryption) on port 21. Using your browser to access FTP sites will not provide a secure connection. ExactTarget recommends that you use a third-party FTP utility to access the FTP. Your import file is removed from the FTP site immediately after it is imported. A periodic clean-up is scheduled to remove files that have not been used over a period of time. Please contact ExactTarget Support if you have questions. File RequirementsThe following sections detail the requirements for filenames, file formats, and encryption. See the help topic entitled "Importing Subscribers into a List." Filename RequirementsThe name of each file that you upload to the ExactTarget FTP site must contain either your ExactTarget member ID or your company name to ensure its uniqueness. Additionally, the filename must not contain any characters that are restricted by Microsoft Windows. The following characters must not appear in your filenames: Format RequirementsYour import file must meet the following requirements:
Encryption SupportIf the advanced feature for encrypted imports is enabled in your account, you can encrypt your import file. ExactTarget supports files encrypted with the GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG). You can find out more about the GnuPG format and download the software at http://www.gnupg.org/. The ExactTarget public GnuPG key is located at the following address: http://members.exacttarget.com/Content/Subscribers/SubsLists/publickey.txt Accessing the ExactTarget FTP SiteThe ExactTarget FTP site is located at the following address: When prompted to log in, use the following username and password:
Once logged in, you simply drag your import file into the browser window to upload the file. Note: If the enhanced FTP option is enabled for your account, please contact your ExactTarget account manager for your organization's account-specific login information. Importing a Subscriber File from the FTP SiteWhen you have FTP options enabled, the Identify Source File dialog box in the Import Subscriber wizard contains additional options:
All other aspects of importing your subscribers is the same as it is for standard (non-FTP) imports. Please refer to the online help within the ExactTarget application for full details on the import process. TroubleshootingHere are helpful hints to troubleshoot issues you might encounter. Permission ErrorIssue: You receive a permission error while trying to copy your file to the FTP site. Possible resolution: Another file with the same filename already exists on the FTP site. Rename your file and try again to copy the file to the FTP site. Windows Folder Access ErrorIssue: You receive the following error when you try to log in to the FTP site: Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder. Possible resolution: According to Microsoft, this issue can occur when you are attempting to access the FTP site from behind a firewall and you have folder view for FTP sites enabled in Internet Explorer. Go to the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box and clear (deselect) the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box. Then try accessing the FTP site again. For more information, see the following Microsoft knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814473. Unable to Log InIssue: You are unable to log in to the FTP site. Possible resolution: Your organization might be set up to deny users access to all external FTP sites. Ask your organization's system administrator whether you can access FTP sites. This page was last updated by Josh Cloud on Tue, 31 May 2011 14:10:51 GMT.
