What Is a File Transfer Activity

A file transfer is an activity to use to upload a file to or download a file from a transfer location that you specify. The file transfer activity transfers files securely. This activity can also unencrypt or uncompress a file.

When you define a file transfer activity in the system, you provide information that the activity uses each time it runs. The information gives the specifics of the file to unencrypt or uncompress.

    Properties

When you define a file transfer activity, you first indicate whether the activity Downloads (gets) or Uploads (puts) the specified file in the specified location.

    Source

When you define a file transfer activity, you provide the following information about the file to be transferred:

    • File Location - You determine the values that you can select in this field by creating a file transfer location on the Admin tab. See How to Create a File Transfer Location.
    • File Naming Pattern - The file transfer activity provides flexibility in how you name the file. You can enter a static name or you can include placeholders for the date. See the following table for examples.
File Naming Pattern The System Looks For Example
      subscribers.csv a file named subscribers.csv subscribers.csv
subscribers%%Month%%.csv a filename where the last two characters are two-digit month.

      subscriber12.csv

      subscribers%%Year%%%%Month%%%%Day%%.csv a filename whose format is four-digit year, two-digit month, and two-digit day. subscriber20101206.csv
Note: You can only use the following three substitution values: %%Year%%, %%Month%%, and %%Day%%.
If the file transfer activity cannot find a file with a date in the file name, it will continue to search for the most recent file and import that file. If no matching file at all can be found, the file transfer activity will error out.
    • Use local time one setting - Select this option if you want the activity to use the time zone configured in your account. If you don't select the new checkbox, the activity uses CST.

    Download

This information applies when you have selected Download from the Transfer Type options.

    Transfer Settings

When you define a file transfer activity, you specify the following information about transferring the file:

    • Whether the File is compressed. If the file is compressed and not encrypted, the File Naming Pattern that you enter in the Source section must have a .ZIP extension.
    • Whether the File is encrypted. If the file is encrypted, the extension of the uncompressed file must be .PGP or .GPG. The application supports PGP (.PGP) and GNU Privacy Guard (.GPG) message encryption.

    File Transfer Qualifications

    • You can select whether to skip the file transfer if the last transfer was less than the number of hours that you specify.
    • You can select whether to fail the transfer if the transfer is older than the number of hours that you specify, and allow a system buffer of a number the hours that you specify.

    Upload

This information applies when you have selected Upload from the Transfer Type options.

    Public Key

After you have created keys in the Key Management section under the Admin tab, your keys appear in the Public Key dropdown. You choose the appropriate key from the dropdown menu and use it as part of the file encryption process. See the Encryption Key Management page for more information on encrypted key management.

    Transfer Settings

If you wish to encrypt your upload, you select the Encrypt file option, then click either the GOP or PGP radio button. See the FTP Guidefor information on Encryption Support.
