Facebook LikeFrom $1Table of contents
This page presents conceptual and procedural information about ExactTarget's Facebook Like functionality. What Is Facebook LikeFacebook Like is an image you insert into a content area in your email or in an HTML Paste email that allows your subscribers to "like" your content and share your message with their Facebook friends. You have the ability to configure what content your subscribers share. With template-based emails, you can configure the Like button to share the content you're sending in the email, one specific content area, or you can provide an alternative URL that the Like button shares. For example, if you're sending a monthly newsletter and you include a blurb in the sidebar about a giveaway contest you're running, you might want to insert a Facebook Like button, and you can configure the Like button to share a link to your giveaway webpage instead of the content in the email. In order to configure your Facebook Like button, you must have the Facebook App ID associated with your Facebook Page. See How to Find Your Facebook App ID. When a subscriber clicks on the Like button, the system posts the content to the subscriber's Facebook wall and Facebook includes the content in the subscriber's friends' News Feed. You configure how you want the Facebook post to appear. In the configuration window, you have a preview window that allows you to see exactly how the Facebook post will look. If you configure the Facebook Like button to "like" a specific URL, the system doesn't render the preview in the configuration window, but it pulls content from the URL when a subscriber "likes" your content. You can test how your content appears by sending yourself a copy of the email (not a test send), "liking" it, and then viewing how the system renders it on Facebook. "Liking" a Unique URLIf you configure your Facebook Like button to "like" a unique URL in a template-based email, you can't define from the ExactTarget application how the wall post appears in Facebook, but you can insert code on your webpage that tells Facebook what to share. For example, if you configure your Like button to "like" your company's homepage, you can't define in ExactTarget the Facebook post title and image that's shared. But you can add code to your homepage that tells Facebook exactly what to display on Facebook. If you don't add code to your website, Facebook will automatically pull a title and image from the URL based on a proprietary algorithm. If you want to control the way your Facebook post appears on Facebook, it's recommended you add the code to your website. See Facebook's documentation to add the appropriate code to your website. We provide this as a service for ExactTarget users, but for the most up-to-date information, refer to Facebook's documentation: http://developers.facebook.com. In order to use the Facebook Like functionality in your ExactTarget emails, you have to create a Facebook App. A Facebook App can be used for a variety of tasks, but for the purposes of integrating with ExactTarget, Facebook Apps allow you to track how many "likes" you receive. To read more about Facebook Apps, see Facebook's documentation: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/guides/canvas/. Your Facebook followers have little to no visibility of your Facebook App. You primarily use your App to track how many "likes" you receive from your emails. For that reason, you can create as many Apps as necessary. For example, if you send a monthly newsletter with a Facebook Like button, you might want to create a Facebook App for each newsletter so you can accurately track how many likes you receive for each send. When you create your App on Facebook, you provide a Site URL and Site Domain. If you configure your Facebook Like button to "like" the email you're sending, the Site URL and Site Domain will always be default ExactTarget URLs (and we provide those URLs for you in the How to Create a Facebook App procedure). Because you use default ExactTarget URLs, you have the option of using the same App for each email send, but realize you won't be able to track how many "likes" you receive for each individual send. For example, if you send June's newsletter and receive 50 "likes", and then send July's newsletter using the same App ID and receive 100 "likes", your App will show you have 150 "likes". Depending on how you want to track your "likes", you might want to create a new App for each email send you perform or for each Like button you have in your email. If you don't care to separate your like tracking with different Facebook Apps, you can use the same App ID for every email send (regardless of whether the Like button "likes" the email or a unique URL). If you configure your Facebook Like button to "like" a URL, you can create a new Facebook App and insert the Site URL and Site Domain of the URL you want subscribers to "like". For example, if you're "liking" www.example.com, the Site URL would be http://www.example.com and the Site Domain would be example.com. Make sure that every Facebook Like button you insert into an email has the App ID that corresponds with the URL you're liking or the App that you're using to track the likes. If you enter the wrong App ID, the Like button either won't work when you send to subscribers, or your tracking will show up in the wrong App.
Tracking Facebook LikeExactTarget doesn't currently provide a tracking mechanism to determine how many people "liked" your content in the application; however, you can view tracking on Facebook in Facebook Insights: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/insights. Why Use Facebook LikeUse Facebook Like to drive subscriber engagement with your email messages. When you allow your readers to share your content with their friends, you reach a wider audience and have the chance to gain more subscribers. ScenarioA marketer from Northern Trail Outfitters is sending out a newsletter advertising a winter jacket sale. She wants to include a Facebook Like button so her subscribers can share the sale with their friends on their Facebook walls. The marketer clicks the Facebook icon in the editor and configures the Facebook Like icon using the Facebook Post Preview window to make the Facebook post look just like she wants it to.
She clicks OK and the Facebook Like button appears in her email.
She sends the email to her subscribers. When a subscriber receives the email, he clicks the Like button in the email.
The subscriber is taken to a Facebook Like landing page where, if he's not already logged into Facebook, he's prompted to log in and click the Like button again. If he's already logged in, he sees this page and clicks the Like button again.
Once he clicks the Like button on the Facebook Like landing page, the content is posted to his Facebook wall. He's given the opportunity to add a comment before it's posted to Facebook.
